Social Media News and Updates - March 23rd

Facebook: Under the Hood: Building the Location API - Facebook is making a HUGE push into the location space with an API that will allow apps to both push and pull data from Facebook. With this new functionality, you can do things like push geo-coded photos to Facebook with Instagram, and then pull them into your Foursquare check-in using Facebook as the middle man. Expect to see a revival of geo-located data in the coming months as developers take advantage of this new ability.

FastCompany Exclusive: Hipstamatic, Instagram To Unveil Photo-Sharing Partnership - As Instagram continues to grow (there are now more than 27 million users) they’re making moves to become the go-to network for photo sharing, by opening up their API and announcing Hipstamatic as the first partner. In the same way Twitter allows 3rd party apps to post to their network, and then tags where those Tweets come from, Hipstamatic users can now post directly to Instagram without going through the Instagram app, and photos that come from Hipstamatic will be tagged as such within the Instagram feed.
Lowe’s Commercial “Coloring Book” - Lowe’s might be the first major advertiser to include a Pinterest logo at the end of their TV commercials. Currently they only have 4,000 followers of their Pinterest account, but it’ll be interesting to see if that number grows from the awareness this logo generates.
Inspiration Day by Kotex - Kotex put together an interesting program recently that they ran through Pinterest, where they would follow the boards of 50 women they wanted to reach out to, and then sent them gifts filled with all the things they liked, as shown through their Pinterest pins. Response was HUGE (as expected) and shows that Pinterest influencers (Pinfluencers? TM) are already starting to emerge.
Drawsome intern - Muse is an agency out of Amsterdam, and they’ve jumped on the Draw Something bandwagon (which recently sold to Zynga for $180 million) to search for their next intern. To apply, candidates play a game of Draw Something against the agency, and those that can convey an idea using the limited space of a Draw Something game are given the opportunity to apply for an internship.

Twitter Turns Six - This week, Twitter turned six, and announced a few interesting stats about their growth: There are more than 140 million active users, who send more than 340 million Tweets per day.
Celebrities Read Tweets About Themselves - If you’ve ever wondered what celebs think when they read terrible Tweets about themselves, then check out this great skit from the Jimmy Kimmel show.

Capturing The Value Of Social Media Using Google Analytics - Google is adding social media to their Analytics product to help companies understand the monetary value of their efforts, and to start working towards an ROI number for things like Twitter interactions and Facebook fan engagement.

Retailers Add Gadgets for Shoppers at Ease With Technology - It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, but The New York Times found that many younger shoppers prefer to ask their iPhones and iPads for help when shopping, instead of salespeople.
Cinnamon Challenge YouTube Craze Gains Millions Of Viewers, Frightens Health Professionals - The cinnamon challenge has been around for years, but thanks to the magic of YouTube, it’s gaining a new surge in popularity as people share videos of them taking the challenge through their social channels. In response, the medical community wants to remind everyone that this could kill you. (So if you’re going to try it, make sure you get it on video, since death by cinnamon is a guaranteed viral video…)
